Why Would Anyone Want to be a Vegetarian?

By Arnoux (are-know) Goran I was asked recently by a personal trainer friend of mine, Corey Beasley who is a great guy how I would answer his clients who are curious about a vegetarian diet. Very briefly I would say…

You Could be Like Four Time Mr. Universe Bill Pearl and do it for Health Reasons

In his recent book Getting Stronger Bill explains that he became a vegetarian after the doctor at NASA tested his cholesterol at 309 and told him to make a change.  At the time he was experiencing high blood pressure, high uric acid levels, was unable to clench his fists, was taking pain killers for his knee and elbow pain and couldn’t workout 2-3 hours per day anymore. By becoming a vegetarian his health challenges improved.  He also said he became a lot nicer.  People were surprised that he was able to maintain his weight and strength without eating meat.  He claims that you don’t need to eat meat to get the protein or other nutrients that you need.  He and his wife have been vegetarians for over 35 years and he still carries the same amount of weight past age 70 that he did when he won his 4 Mr. Universe titles.

You Could do it for Athletic Performance
Brendan Braiser the #1 Tri-athlete in Canada and author of the #1 best selling book Thrive claims that the ONLY reason why he is the best in his athletic field is because his die is alkaline, and only a vegan (no animal products at all, not even dairy or eggs) diet can be alkaline.  In actuality, the less processing or cooking the more likely the food is to be alkaline.  In our Total Health Mastery trainings we explain in scientific terms WHY eating an alkaline diet would produce the kind of results a recent Yale study demonstrated.   In the study conducted by Professor Irving Fisher and published in the Yale Medical Journal a group of meat eating athletes were tested for endurance and strength compared to a group of vegetarians that were half athletes and half non-athletes.  The vegetarians had more than double the endurance than those who ate meat, even though half of them were not athletes and ALL of the meat eaters were athletes.  Does this mean that if you are a vegetarian you will be in better shape than an athlete that eats meat?

Hmmm… well there are a few other notable vegetarian athletes such as:

Carl Lewis and Edwin Moses (two of the greatest track stars ever!)
Stan Price (one time holder of the world bench press record)
Roy Hilligan (famous bodybuilder)
Paavo Nurmi (record for longest triathlon in 1 day)
Hank Aaron (former home run king of baseball)
Countless others that you can find reference to in Diet for A New America by John Robbins or Nature’s First Law by Wolfe, Arlin and Dini.

Dave Scott is also a vegetarian.  He is the record holder of what may be the most intense athletic event on Earth, the Ironman Triathalon.  In case you don’t know the Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 112 bike ride and then finally ends up with a 26.2 mile marathon.  It takes an average of 20 hours to complete!  Dave Scott, considered by many to be the world’s fittest man not only holds the record, he is the only person to win more than once, he has won six times including four times in a row as of 1987!  He is quoted as saying, “The idea that you need to eat meat for protein is a ridiculous fallacy.”

You Could do it to Prevent Cancer
The largest study ever done on nutrition, The China Study, proved that animal protein fertilizes cancer.  It doesn’t necessarily cause a cancer cell to form, but once it does form, it allows it to grow rapidly.  Creator of the study, T. Colon Powell, stated in the fantastic documentary Healing Cancer From the Inside Out “we could literally turn cancer on or off by adding or removing animal protein.”  Wow isn’t that shocking!  To think that you can literally turn off cancer by eliminating animal protein.  If you’re wondering why your doctor didn’t tell you this, I do cover this in other articles and during our trainings, but generally they may not have heard of it because it’s such new and cutting edge information.  It’s also in the movie I mention above, which is truly a great movie and will change your life forever.

You Could do it for More Energy
In my mini-seminar How to Skyrocket Your Energy Levels in 15 Minutes or Less you’ll discover that 60% of your energy comes from oxygen and one of the biggest factors in the amount of oxygen in your body is determined by the pH balance of your blood.  Your blood is meant to be alkaline so if you eat a more alkaline diet it is a basic biological fact that you will have more energy, in fact, a lot more.

The Proof is in the Pudding
It’s very strange to hear basic scientific facts that are easily researched and proven that go against what “everybody knows.”  For example, “everybody knows” you have to eat meat for protein, in spite of what the world’s fittest man, Dave Scott says about it.  The beauty of being human is that we have the freedom to think for ourselves.  Years ago “everybody” knew that the world was flat, the sun revolved around the Earth, that men were better than women, that humans would never fly, that a light bulb could never last, that the car would never be affordable to the average person and on and on.  Thankfully some intelligent people questioned these commonly accepted beliefs.

To understand why we have commonly accepted that we need to eat meat for protein all we need to do is look at the source of our health education.  Since 1915 in America ALL health education has been provided by the National Dairy Council with the support of the egg and meat industry.  This is still true today.  They also provide the health and nutritional education for physical therapists and I recently heard even dieticians.  Medical doctors only receive an average of 2-3 hours of nutritional training.  When I was a freshman in high school we were taught that our diet should be 30% protein.  Later through my own research I found out that breast milk is the perfect food for a human baby and that it’s only 4.5-5% protein and that the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that the adequate amount of protein for an adult is 2.5%.  That’s a far cry from 30%.  Also beef is only 27% protein and our winged friends (chicken, turkey, etc) are around 40% protein but green vegetables are 20-70% protein with spinach at 49%.  Popeye was right!!

The National Dairy Council has successfully educated every American to believe that we must eat 10 times as much protein as is deemed necessary by modern science and that the only sources of protein are meats, eggs and dairy when green vegetables are much higher in protein.

I’m in Shock!
It’s a lot to take in.  If you are feeling dizzy by now that’s ok!  The information you just received may be really challenging everything you’ve ever heard in your life.  You may have many questions.  I recommend you look up the references I’ve mentioned or at the very least read Diet for a New America by John Robbins.  If you would like more information from me or Total Health Mastery please visit our website www.THMastery.com where you can read more articles, answers to questions, get free recipes and even get a free training, The Awakening as our gift to you.   Simply enter your email address in the "sign up for the newsletter" bar on the top right of our website and you'll get it instantly!

My broken heart... I had gone through a break up. I didn't know this class dealt with emotional stuff. I got over a broken heart that I had been trying to get over for a year. I've checked myself everyday now for the past month to see if it is really gone, because I just can't believe it. That alone is worth every bit of this course."
